Asa Ellerup asked Rex Heuermann how many women he killed. He said eight without flinching. He told her seven of them died in the basement of the house she still lives in, while she and the kids were on vacation. She addressed him as Mr. Heuermann during the conversation. Not Rex. Not her husband.
Their daughter Victoria told documentary producers she believes her father most likely committed the murders. She said on camera — while we were having fun on vacation, he was home murdering and dismembering women here. Asa’s attorney says Asa may never fully accept it.
In court, Heuermann answered every question from the DA in the same flat voice. Strangulation. Every time. He never turned to look at the gallery. His attorney said the plea brought a huge sense of relief. People who knew him socially called him respectful and warm with women. Every woman he killed was someone the world had already failed to notice was gone.
And then there is the basement. Asa gutted it. New floor, new walls, new everything. Then she moved in. She sleeps where seven women were killed. She told a documentary crew the nightmares come every night and will follow her forever. She chose not to attend sentencing. The community wants the house demolished. Strangers photograph it from the street. Valerie Mack’s son — he was six when his mother was murdered — has filed a lawsuit alleging the family knew or deliberately looked away.
This is the full three-part conversation with psychotherapist Shavaun Scott. Denial, compartmentalization, and the impossible question of what comes next.
